The book of Zechariah was written between ~520–518 B.C. This was at the post-exile, during the time of the temple rebuilding. Zechariah ministered alongside Haggai after the Jewish people returned from Babylonian exile. The temple in Jerusalem was in ruins, and the people were discouraged.
The key theme of the book is God remembers. (That’s what “Zechariah” means!)Despite discouragement, opposition, and delay, God hadn’t forgotten His promises to His people—or His plan for the Messiah.
